A COMPETENCY-BASED TEXTBOOK FOR THE LEARNERS OF NON-ENGLISH PROGRAM (RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT AT STATE UNIVERSITIES IN CENTRAL JAVA AND YOGYAKARTA) INDONESIA

This study aims to describe the development of a Competency-Based EAP Textbook for students of non-English department in state universities in Central Java and Yogyakarta, emphasizing on the quality of English textbook, needs analysis, process of development, and the effectiveness of the competency-based EAP textbook. Research was done using Research & Development Design implementing four procedures: exploration, development, testing and dissemination and assigned six states universities in Central Java and Yogjakarta Indonesia: Diponegoro University (UNDIP), Semarang State University (UNNES), Jendral Soedirman University (UNSOED), Gadjah Mada Univerrity (UGM), Yogjakarta State University (UNY), and Sebelas Maret University (UNS). Exploration stage revealed EAP Syllabus desbribing Delta Cambridge Syllabus as the model and needs analysis of EAP. The development stage through preliminary field testing found a final product of a Competency-Based EAP Textbook whose objective is to achieve academic literacy and core materials on reading, writing, academic vocabulary, 1,000-2,000 general word list and academic grammar. Finding of main field testing discovered that the textbook is effective to increase students’ English competency.
